Human Interaction
About
Human interaction in the robotics field is growing in public popularity with fun movies like WALL-E and in academic popularity with breakthroughs in human interactive robots (JIBO, Baxter, PR2). At Olin, we have recently launched a project which is studying how humans interact with machines, and how robots could interact with humans in close-quarter environments. Our robot, Jarah, has been inspired by several robots of the lab's past including a student-directed project in human interaction (WALL-E II) and a project sponsored by Intel (Jimmy).
Our newest robot, Edwin, is a re-purposed industrial arm that will resemble an animal (in this case, a dragon), which will use body posturing, natural language, and expression to communicate. At present Edwin's tasks may involve solving the Towers of Hanoi, playing Simon Says, and Dancing among more general interactions like greetings and simple conversation.
